Our First Canal Boat Trip: A Day of Friendship, Fresh Air and Good Natters 🧡

Hello everyone, and welcome back to the blog!

I’m Dan, the Founder of Companion Grove CIC, and this week I wanted to share something very special with you.

We recently held our first Companion Grove outing — a gentle canal boat trip on the Ernest Thomas II with South Staffordshire Narrowboat Company— and I’m so pleased to say it was a real success. We even managed to bring the sunshine along with us!

More importantly, the trip reminded me exactly why Companion Grove exists. Because this was never just about filling seats on a boat. It was about helping people get out, feel included, enjoy friendly company, and have something lovely to look forward to.

More Than Just a Day Out

There is something really powerful about a simple change of scenery.

For some people, getting out and about can become harder over time. Maybe they no longer drive. Maybe confidence has dipped. Before long, the world can start to feel smaller.

That’s why days like this matter. Our canal trip gave people the chance to sit back, enjoy the water, share a cuppa, and spend time with others in a relaxed and welcoming setting.

No pressure.
No rush.
Just good company and a peaceful day on the canal.

From Quiet Car to Non-Stop Chat

What stood out to me most wasn't just the lovely boat itself. It was the heart and the wonderful chatter that filled the day.

To be completely honest, the car ride on the way to the boat was a little bit quiet! Everyone, including myself was a little nervous. It is completely normal to feel a bit quiet or nervous when you are heading off to meet new people.

But it didn't stay that way for long.

As soon as we stepped out into the lovely, bright sunshine, the ice began to melt. We spent the afternoon getting to know one another, swapping stories, and laughing over our mugs of tea.

By the time we got back into the car for the journey home? Well, you couldn't get a word in edgewise! The quiet car had transformed into a non-stop chat. Everyone was buzzing, sharing their favourite parts of the day, and laughing together like old friends.

The Little Moments Matter

After a delicious lunch courtesy of Cup A Cha Stafford, we settled down to enjoy some soft instrumental music. Between the gentle, slow movement of the boat and the peaceful surroundings, a few people even comfortably nodded off for a little afternoon snooze! It was the perfect picture of total relaxation and safety.

Meanwhile, those who wanted to stepped out onto the bow of the boat. It was wonderful to see them standing together, taking in the beautiful sunshine and the lovely green countryside drifting by.

Those are the moments that can change someone’s whole week:

  • People smiling over a cup of tea and a slice of cake.
  • Wonderful conversations starting between people who had only just met.
  • The simple joy of feeling the warm sun on your face while watching the canal drift by.
  • The feeling that everyone belonged there.

Sometimes, we underestimate the impact of having something in the diary. Something to look forward to. Something to talk about afterwards. For many older neighbours, that can make a real difference.

Bringing People Together

At Companion Grove CIC, our mission is to reduce isolation and help people stay connected to their community. This outing showed how important that is.

When people come together in a friendly, safe, and relaxed environment, confidence starts to grow. People feel seen. They feel included.

It is not always about big events or complicated plans. Sometimes, it is just a boat trip, a mug of tea, and someone asking, “How are you today?”

Thank You to Everyone Who Joined Us

I want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who came along and helped make the day so enjoyable. Thank you for the conversations, the non-stop chatter, and the warm spirit you brought with you.

A big thank you also to everyone who supported the trip, shared our posts, or told a friend. Every bit of support helps us continue building something meaningful here in Stafford.

This Is Only the Beginning

The Grove is growing. We are already thinking about future outings, social events, gentle trips, and community gatherings.

If you, your parent, a neighbour, or someone you know would benefit from joining future Companion Grove outings, please do get in touch. You do not have to wait until someone feels lonely or isolated. Sometimes, the best support is simply helping someone stay connected before their world gets too small.
